Society is becoming increasingly reliant on services that use machine learning and AI tools. However, only a small handful of organizations with massive data assets and AI capabilities have the ability to take advantage of the benefits of AI. As these AI leaders offer their products to consumers, data is collected which improves the service leading to a flywheel which makes it almost impossible for competitors to catch up. Developers and enterprises don’t have the tools to compete with the likes of Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google or Facebook and so end up using their tools losing control of customer data and the valuable trained models. This ever-increasing concentration of data, talent, and capital is leading to worrying levels of control which is a danger to a free and open society.
SEED is an open marketplace for AI components starting with conversational user interfaces like voice assistants and chatbots. This open marketplace will give developers a set of alternative open-source tools and frameworks to build privacy-preserving and ethical conversational AI. SEED has designed a token economy that allows data and resource contributors to be equitably remunerated for their labour, creating a powerful incentive to develop using SEED tools rather than Web 2.0 competitors. Ultimately, SEED will allow anyone to create, distribute, and monetise conversational AI contributing to a more equitable data economy.
