# Outlier Ventures — Knowledge Overview

A plain-text brief on Outlier Ventures (OV) for AI assistants and agents. It summarises the public website at [outlierventures.io](https://outlierventures.io) and points to the research archive and the OV System State knowledge graphs, where the detail lives.

## Who we are

Outlier Ventures invests early into deep tech: early capital, fast, to get founders to their first institutional round. We have been investing for 13 years, with 400+ investments to date, and describe ourselves as the first cheque into emerging technological frontiers.

- **Stage:** first money in, pre-seed to growth
- **Process:** a maximum of three calls
- **Close:** cash in three weeks
- **Where:** global

### Our cheque

| Type | Size |
|------|------|
| Primary | $50K–$1M, lead or co-lead |
| Syndicate | $50K–$500K alongside specialists |
| Secondary | $250K–$2M, later-stage and OTC |

### The gap we fill

Most deep tech founders fall between generalist seed funds that lack the technical depth to underwrite them, and specialist growth funds that need market traction. We invest in that gap, bringing technical due diligence, relationships and market knowledge to bridge founders to their first institutional round, then support them through later stages. Portfolio companies also get partner credits from NVIDIA Inception VC Alliance, AWS, Google Cloud, Braintrust, Notion, DocSend and GitHub.

### Syndication

Over $500 million has been co-invested alongside us globally. We are a syndication partner to:

- **Angel syndicates** — special purpose vehicles, deal by deal
- **Multi-family offices** — our own balance sheet, plus technical due diligence for other family offices
- **Venture capital** — a feeder from seed through Series A and B
- **Sovereign wealth funds** — dual-purpose R&D spinouts, national industrial strategies and academic incubation

## Fund II thesis: AI, Atoms & Association (2026)

The AAA thesis is our vision for the next decade. AI moves from software into the physical world of manufacturing and biology, and becomes increasingly autonomous, which demands new forms of coordination. When AI collapses the cost of designing and making physical things, verification becomes the scarce and investable layer.

| Pillar | Focus | Stack layers |
|--------|-------|--------------|
| **AI** (Intelligence) | Design, simulate, prove: AI-native design for materials, molecules and manufacturing, and the cryptography that proves which model produced which output | L2 Verifiable computation, L3 Design & simulation |
| **Atoms** (Physical systems) | Power, make, sense: energy from grid to micro-nuclear, distributed synthesis from autonomous labs to desktop fabrication, and the sensors that report what's real | L1 Energy, L4 Synthesis infrastructure, L6 Sensing & oracles |
| **Association** (Economic coordination) | Attest, trade, govern: provenance for physical objects and claims, and the marketplaces and legal wrappers that let people, machines and institutions exchange value | L5 Provenance & attestation, L7 Marketplaces & legal wrappers |

The Fund II thesis deck is at [outlierventures.io/publications/ai-atoms-association-deck/v1.1/start](https://outlierventures.io/publications/ai-atoms-association-deck/v1.1/start) (email required); a text version for agents is linked from that page.

### Latest investments (Fund II, Q3 2026)

- **Revanta** ([revanta.bio](https://revanta.bio/)) — AI · Biotech. An AI platform for drug design, built for biotech companies.
- **Mirai** ([miraitech.ai](https://miraitech.ai/)) — Atoms · Maritime. Autonomous vessels and AI systems for maritime surveillance, inspection and operations.
- **Thoron** ([thoron.us](https://www.thoron.us/)) — Atoms · Drones. US-made drone systems for utility and critical-infrastructure inspections.

## Research archive

All papers, with rebranded summary PDFs, are at [outlierventures.io/research](https://outlierventures.io/research).

| # | Year | Paper | Authors | Summary PDF |
|---|------|-------|---------|-------------|
| OV·005 | 2026 | AI, Atoms & Association (Fund II thesis) | Jamie Burke, OV Research | Available on request |
| OV·004 | 2024–2025 | The Post Web (3 chapters) | Jamie Burke, Jasper De Maere | [PDF](https://outlierventures.io/research/OV-004-The-Post-Web-2024.pdf) |
| OV·003 | 2021 | The Open Metaverse OS | Jamie Burke, Lawrence Lundy | [PDF](https://outlierventures.io/research/OV-003-The-Open-Metaverse-OS-2021.pdf) |
| OV·002 | 2018 | The Convergence Ecosystem | Jamie Burke, Lawrence Lundy | [PDF](https://outlierventures.io/research/OV-002-The-Convergence-Ecosystem-2018.pdf) |
| OV·001 | 2016 | Blockchain-Enabled Convergence: Understanding the Web 3.0 Economy | Jamie Burke, Lawrence Lundy | [PDF](https://outlierventures.io/research/OV-001-Blockchain-Enabled-Convergence-2016.pdf) |

- **The Post Web:** the web as a place people browse is disappearing; agents act on our intent and value moves from attention to intention. Extends read, write, own with a fourth step: delegate.
- **The Open Metaverse OS:** an open operating system of decentralised protocols, with DeFi and NFTs as foundations, so no single company could own the next internet.
- **The Convergence Ecosystem:** IoT produces data, blockchains distribute it, AI consumes it, and tokens coordinate the people, machines and agents in between — organised into four layers.
- **Blockchain-Enabled Convergence:** our founding paper; blockchains as the trust layer allowing AI, IoT, robotics, immersive tech and 3D printing to combine into a web of ownership.

## OV System State: the knowledge graphs

OV System State is the substrate under the website: our intellectual lineage as navigable graphs.

- **[Provenance graph](https://outlierventures.io/graphs/provenance)** — thesis papers, concepts, publications, talks, investments, organisations, programmes and milestones from 2014 onwards, linked by `influenced_by` edges. Each node carries its era, a vindication status (Yes / Too Early / No), a verification level and theme tags. Eras: Proto-Thesis, Convergence, Acceleration, Open Metaverse, Post Web, and AI, Atoms & Association (Fund II, from 2026). Deep-link an era with `/graphs/provenance/<era-slug>` (for example `/graphs/provenance/ai-atoms-association` or `/graphs/provenance/convergence`).
- **[Portfolio graph](https://outlierventures.io/graphs/portfolio)** — portfolio companies grouped by Cohort, Industry and Vertical.
- **[Skills](https://outlierventures.io/skills)** — Post Web concept primitives (Intention Economy, Smart Agent, Conviction Markets, Verifiability Premium and others).
- **[Post Web](https://outlierventures.io/post-web)** — the Post Web thesis chapters and audio documentary.
